A Word of Thanks to Cathleen Kaveny, who brought clarity to the confusion & inadequacy of Archbishop Chaput's Vision of Faithful Citizenship
& to Popes Benedict & Francis who brought an end to his ecclesiastical career
Especially regarding the 2004 & 2008 elections, specifically regarding votes for POTUS, +Chaput and many other prominent Catholics were - if they weren't confused themselves, which it seems to me they were - confusing others about how to apply a classic moral calculus, which employs the principles of cooperation with evil, double effect, intrinsic evil & proportionate reason.
Even interpreted charitably - presupposing they weren't confused about those principles - they ignored many facts & circumstances which, at the time, combined to make their conclusions far less obvious & others' decisions far more defensible than +Chaput and others seemed to imagine, especially regarding the im/probabilities of forseeable outcomes.
Given Cathleen Kaveny's assessments, at the time, though, I believe that they were - at worst, indeed confused in many ways - at best, deeply inadequate.

Neither Pope Benedict nor Pope Francis appointed +Chaput a cardinal in their consistories, making him the first archbishop of Philadelphia to not be promoted to cardinal in over 100 years.
