History Matters to God, Who’s Supremely Passible
Throughout the multiverse, Christ has & will continue to willingly trod manifold & multiform theophanic paths via His multiple incarnations.
In so doing, Christ expresses the divine supreme passibility of the divine consciousness as affected by relations of knowledge & mutual love. Perichoretically, then, beyond the protology & eschatology of the Totus Christus, history matters to God.
Only an impoverished theology would ignore our empirical & human sciences or proceed without an historical consciousness. Only an impoverished formative spirituality would ignore Lonergan’s Law of the Cross as the only sure way forward.
More than the dynamics of Chalcedon must be at work, participatorily. Perichoretically, the corporate identity of the Totus Christus must refer both naturally & personally per an hypostatic identity that’s both formal & nonformal.
I want to say that this is to say that the analogy of being, alone, can’t do the heavy lifting of history’s redemption. It requires also a univocity of love & personal power, which entails an interpersonal divine-human relationship that’s – not only supremely reciprocal, bilateral, mutual & passible, but – symmetric.
That’s all to suggest that the Law of the Cross would otherwise be impotent if it relied solely on following Christ’s example. When we insist on adding a personal logic to our natural logics, we’re basically taking a stance regarding Eucharistic logic. We’re professing that, in addition to giving thanks & memorializing a covenant with a meal, WE’re synergistically, through the loving power of OUR words, power of Jesus’s acts & power of the Holy Spirit’s love, making Christ present in – not only the Word proclaimed, person presiding & sacred species, but – the People gathered.
Does the above not entail a thoroughgoing divine-human symmetry of a really & truly efficacious reenactment that’s sacrificial, redemptive and teleologically soteriological?
The above neither denies the essential divine apatheia nor entails an essential theogony. It urges, rather, the divine supreme passibility with respect to all divinely fitting personal theophanies.
Per my earlier Damascene Cipher, it invokes an hypostatic identity with both natural & personal logics, predicated, respectively, analogically & univocally. After all, without such a semantical univocity, any ontological dissimilitudo doesn’t even work, grammatically.
Go, therefore, in peace to love & serve the Lord.
Ite, missa est!
