People are missing the genius & goodness of Pixar's Lightyear, which revealed that there was no evil emperor fighting Buzz's world from outside.
It was a future & older version of Buzz, himself, whom Buzz was battling inside himself.
That "future Buzz" wanted "present Buzz" to travel back in time to prevent the tragic mistakes of his past, e.g. he wrecked his spaceship.
Buzz's biggest internal battle was with his overconfidence & pride, which prevented him from accepting his imperfections, from forgiving himself & from moving on in the world that had come about as a result of his mistakes.
The true genius & extreme goodness of Pixar's script is best revealed via the movie's "It's a Wonderful Life" type sequences wherein Buzz realizes all that would be lost - not had he never been born, but - had he never crash landed in the first place.
The younger Buzz finally learns to accept himself & his past, especially driven by the realization that, if he changed the past, he'd undo all the living, learning & loving that had taken place in response to & as a result of it, especially as emulated by Izzy, who'd've never been born. Atta girl, Izzy!
Like George Bailey pleading: “I want to live again. Please, let me live again,” one can almost hear Buzz’s inner dialogue saying: “I want to crash again. Please, let me crash again!”
