Locating Christological Asymmetries & Symmetries
[He] takes upon Him a strange form, bearing all me and mine in Himself, that in Himself He may exhaust the bad, as fire does wax, or as the sun does the mists of earth; and that I may partake of His nature by the blending.
~ Nazianzen, Oratio 30
We needn’t deny the modal asymmetries of vertical & exemplarist causes and of emanations & participations, or between finite & infinite modalities and created & uncreated natures.
Beyond analogy, though, if Christ’s hypostatic identity does ground an economic modal perichoresis, we can, at the same time, affirm the horizontal modal symmetry of divine humanization & human divinization.
Beyond the perichoreses of Nazianzen – Christological,
Cyril – Trintological, & Maximus – Theotic or Theandric, even, might we also affirm the Cosmotheandric?
Yes!
cf Damascene: But how shall it be preserved that “God penetrates through everything and fills everything” as the Scripture says: “Do I not fill heaven and earth?, saith the Lord.” (Jer 23:24).
~ De fide orthodoxa 4 as per Nazianzen’s Oratio 28
